Well, this really isn't a database documentation request, and using a questions-only site really isn't the best way to go. There are reputable firms, such as Transcender, that will help you with testing and so on. The point is that you should try and learn the trade, rather than just memorizing questions. I've posted an article that deals with certifications: And another here dealing with being a DBA. I think you may find those more useful than looking up test questions on a site. These are just my thoughts - I do wish you luck in your studies! If you're looking for brain dumps this is not the site to get those answers. The 70-431 exam is a 200-level 'how-to' exam on all the nuts and bolts of SQL Server 2005. There are free eLearning classes available on the Microsoft web site which will help you with the content information for the test, as well as a number of excellent books hitting the market about now. I believe you'll get about 40 questions on the test, though it may be higher than that, and you'll get about 2 1/2 hours to answer them. Go to and click on Learning and you'll find out all you need to know to prepare for the test. Your question really belongs in a separate/new thread. This thread is about MCTS. But to answer your question, I would advise against putting it on the domain controller. The domain controller contains the Active Directory and security is extremely important. Adding any other role such as SQL Server would complicate security configuration for it. Actually, if possible, I would set up a new dedicated SQL Server - not add it to the Exchange Server 2003. Mixing multiple roles on one server always complicates security. But if you cannot set up a new dedicated server I would add it to the Exchange Server 2003. Other more experienced people may have different ideas. Hello everyone, I would like to let you all know and be aware of the fact that microsoft has changed its exam pattern for 070-431 be very carefull as microsoft has changed the exam pattern and due to which i failed the exam today. Its now based on simulations questions which comes after the multiple choice questions i got 15 simulations separately apart from 35 multi choice questions along with exibits. I wasnt aware of this fact and it wasnt mentioned ánywhere about simulations questions I think no one knows about it I am the first to face this type of exam. The exams comes up with 2 sections the first sections was questions that was 35 in 1hr and the next was simulations that was 15 2hr 15mins so in total it was 195min exam and I got all correct in first section and the second section was gred out 60% I got 560 out of 700 may not be difficult but very new. I'm going to be taking the test soon and was afraid they would do something like this. They did this to me on the 70-228. Completely changed the content and format from what my rather expensive test prep materials were based on. Could you give us a clue as to what the simulations focused on? TSQL, SSMS, etc.) I can do just about everything you need to do in SSMS and other GUI tools, but I don't have all the full syntaxes for the TSQL methods memorized (ie. Create HTTP endpoint for SOAP vs. TCP endpoint for mirroring). Well, this really isn't a database documentation request, and using a questions-only site really isn't the best way to go. Hi Gunny, I have cleared MCTS last two months before. They have concentrated more on basics. Topics to be concentrated more, 1. Database Mirroring 2. Replication 3. Log shipping Sample questions: 1. They have asked me to find the problematic trigger among the triggers displayed. We have to analyse like, which trigger is creating problems. - Scenario 1- Simulation 2. Multiple processes running in my system and my database is hanging now and i have to kill some of the processes to enable my database functioning. - Simulation question - Hint we have delete the process with more reads and writes. Regards, Venkatesan Prabu. J Please provide your valuable feedback. Hi All, I took Sql server 2005 Implementation and Maintenance 70-431 exam yesterday and cleared. The links and tips provided in this thread were extremely helpful and hence I thought of adding somemore thoughts to it as it will definitely be helpful to whomever views it. Exam Pattern: ********** Total Questions 47 - 35 normal questions and 12 simulations Total Duration - Around 3hrs approximately (You will have ample time) Preparation Guide - I used MCTS 70-431 press book from Microsoft, really good one If you have some work experience it will be easy. Apart from that you have Virtual labs and ofcourse MSDN forums is really good place to learn. Simulation questions carried more weightage and It was really easier as it basically deals with SSMS. You need to know how to perform an operation using Sql Server Management Studio. Some examples like, 1. How to take Full backup,Differential,Transactional backup etc. How to kill a Spid, create index, change schema owner and drop login, modify views, change server and database settings like recovery model using SSMS. The bottomline is, you need to perform any operation using SSMS. If you practice everything and take the exam it will surely be easy All the BEST Hope this helps! I also took this recently, about 2 weeks ago, and you need to pay attention to what the study guide by microsoft says about the fastest way to do things, or the correct order to do things. I used the Microsoft Press guides to study, along with the practice cd it comes with. It is well worth the cost of the Microsoft Press materials. It was definately prepped me for the exam. There are practical excercises in the book. It is in the best interest of anyone taking the exam to pay attention to those and actually do them. I have been studying for all 3 exams for the MCITP for right about a year now, while upgrading servers from 2000 to 2005, and getting real time hands on experience with Administering a live mirror set, rebuilding permissions and designing schemas, and day to day maintenance. Good luck to anyone taking the exam. If you are prepared, it really isn't that difficult. Several of the SQL Server 2005 exams have 2 sections. You cannot transfer time from one section to the other. Microsoft takes the lower score as the final result, not the average. Then again, certification exams not meant to be easy. The exams are practical oriented. In some, fictional business companies, similar to AdventureWorks Cycles, are used to state the environment & issues. The questioned are based on that. I got certified as MCITP Database Administrator, Database Developer & Business Intelligence Developer. Reminder: Microsoft can change the certification exams anytime, so my notes above maybe already obsolete. Kalman Toth New Book. Other exams may not have simulation, but may have the practical orientation with imaginary business companies. Also other exam may have the segmentation whereby once you leave it, you cannot use the remaining time for the next segment and you can never return. Preparation for simulation: just have some fun with SSMS Object Explorer. Investigate it inside out. Other exams may have the lowest score of the 2 halfs will become the final score. Just a little motivation for exam takers to learn everything. Kalman Toth New Book. No BOL or any other help maybe available. Be careful about taking out chewing gum from your pocket! Some places are very strict! Check with them about chewing gum or candy policy before you go into the testing room. Bottled water is usually ok. The simulation questions maybe operating in a crippled version of Management Studio, same look and feel but most functionality maybe cut out. Enough functionality maybe left to answer the exercise properly. Best preparation: hours and hours, days & days with SSMS Object Explorer. Kalman Toth New Book. Both sections may be required to have score of 700 or better. I keep using the word 'may' because Microsoft can change anytime any aspect of the exam and scoring. I took this exam, that is how I might have been scored. Here is a quote: EDITED OCTOBER 30, 2007: I want to clarify that, per the first bullet, your score report *will* include two different sections--at the moment it does not. The new reporting format will roll-out with Prometric (not VUE) in coming months. In the meantime, your score report will only include ONE score, and it is the LOWER of your scores on the two sections. From this link: Kalman Toth New Book. Es_vee_kay wrote: Is the material covered in the prep book and practice sessions is Management studio enough for the exam or should I be learning some thing more? The MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exam 70-431): Microsoft® SQL Server™ 2005—Implementation and Maintenance is a good starting point. Make sure you practice along in Management Studio. In addition to the exam book any other education is helpful: SQL classes, books and videos. I do suggest that you may strengthen your TSQL knowledge and Object Explorer navigation expertise for the exam. The exam maybe quite practical oriented. Kalman Toth New Book. Kavin_chennai wrote: But simulation type of question which wesite or which book i should refer ( For admin side). But I need to get experience on admin side like backup, mirroring concepts ect. The simulation questions may not involve complicated SQL Server 2005 technologies like database mirroring. The simulation questions may involve, on the other hand, backup/restore, manipulating database objects like tables, indexes, stored procedures, triggers, functions, etc., and administration problem solving. Kalman Toth New Book. Tips for exam 70-431: memorize everything about SQL Server 2005-- basic syntax, Service Broker, mirroring, which action might enhance response time by 1ms compared to that action, memorize things you've never heard of, system views, functions, how many inches is a log's tail, etc. After taking courses on syntax a few years back, reading several 1000 page books on SQL Server 2000, working as a report writer, working as a database analyst, I decided to take both the Microsoft recommended prep courses for this exam (courses 2779 and 2780 i think). I learned quite a bit. Afterwards, I re-read the Microsoft course books several times, practiced replication, mirroring, etc at home on my Developer Edition, I bought and downloaded the practice tests from Transcender, and I've spent countless hours studying for this exam. This morning, I thought I knew everything there is to know. This afternoon, I took the exam and got a 428. Many of the first 15 multiple choice questions were on material not covered in any of the training references above. The first few questions were especially hard and I spent way to long on them, but I didn't realize that you only get 45 minutes or so to answer the 35 multiple choice questions. So, I didn't even get a chance to answer the last 15 questions. As for the simulations. They're easy. I think I missed one (and for silly reasons), and I had plenty of time leftover. But honestly, I think the simulations are pointless, especially when the wording of the questions is vague and sometimes not exactly correct, and the content in the simulations itself isn't even accurate in all of them. I answered a question 'correctly' today by doing a transaction log backup on a database that was in simple recovery mode.several times hmmmm. Anyway, my advice for those that are just starting out is -- read lots of books (preferably ones that aren't published by Microsoft), practice using SQL Server until you know everything there is to it (preferably through work experience), and memorize every seemingly unimportant detail that you read or hear about. You have to actually learn all the concepts and logic. And don't waste too much of your time and money like I have on other learning resources. Doug_cal wrote: The first few questions were especially hard and I spent way to long on them, but I didn't realize that you only get 45 minutes or so to answer the 35 multiple choice questions. So, I didn't even get a chance to answer the last 15 questions. Both the simulation and multi-choice section may have their own time limits which may not be transferable from one section to another.. (Rob Farley's thread.) The exam maybe quite a bit practical oriented. Therefore real-life dba/developer experience is helpful. While studying for the exam, look out for practical implications. Nevertheless, any learning experience, book, video, or live class, should be helpful, and certainly good for enriching one's knowledge of SQL Server 2005. Kalman Toth New Book. 70-431 may have simulation questions. 70-447 may not have simulation questions. Any exam prep may be helpful if you use them in conjunction with BOL, books and practice along in Management Studio: Object Explorer and queries in Query Editor. Both exams may be quite practical oriented. Example ( this is just an example not a test question): Would you put the transaction log on a dedicated RAID1 drive or on the same drive as tempdb? Theoritically both will work. Practically you get much better performance from the 1st option. Kalman Toth New Book. Priyanka.A wrote: Hi Deepak, I m from Pune. I am now looking for courses or assessments that i can do, preferably through Microsoft or one of their certified Partners that i become a SQL admininstrator or Programer, Are there any such thing because i have looked on the internet and it is all a Jargen that I Cant Get Around, Any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, I am looking to get my MCSD or something such so that i can get qualified, any suggestions? Thanks in advance Dragorian. Dragorian wrote: Hey Guys I am now looking for courses or assessments that i can do, preferably through Microsoft or one of their certified Partners that i become a SQL admininstrator or Programer, Dragorian, Welcome to MSDN Forums. In 2005 you may consider the following certifications: MCITP: Database Administrator MCITP: Database Developer SQL Server 2000 MCDBA cert is still available for a few months, retiring soon. For training consider books, online/multimedia courses, live classes. In all cases practice along on your own copy of SQL Server 2005 (Developer Edition is low cost). You have to make sure that T-SQL queries and administration commands are 'flowing' out from your fingers. You must be very familier with SSMS Object Explorer. Kalman Toth New Book. Hi Everyone, I am a new bee and quite struggling to become familiar with Database Technology. I have been following this thread form the past 1 month and found pretty valuable information. I would like to take 70-431 Exam for which I have been studying the 70-431 Microsoft Self Pased Training Kit and have been working on SSMS and getting familiar with it but, my only problem is I neither have any Work experience on SQL nor I work on it on day to day basis. Do you think it is advisable for me to take up this exam, are there any chances to pass this exam without having any work experience on SQL? Please advise me, I need some help. Hi Deepak, Me too planning to write 70-431 certification at the earliest.i have previously worked in Oracle database and have done certification in that too.i have the MCTS Self paced learning kit(pdf) with me.is it sufficient to prepare for the exam? Also, you have told about Virtual labs.can we get info on certification from here?(sorry.am new to SQL server. ) Did you get any practice ques/dumps for the exam. Please let me know.my email id is [email protected]. Hi Arthi, Please Do NOT study or depend on any dumps. People who study/depend on the dumps will NOT understand the concepts. There's no point in obtaining the certification without obtaining proper technical knowledge. So what i would suggest you is, 1. Install SQL 2005 evaluation edition and practice the concepts 2. Read the concepts and get familiar with SQL 2005 from MS press book for 70-431 3. Refer virtual labs, go through using SSMS from here Virtual labs provide some very useful introduction to topics related to SQL Server. Hi Krishan, Work experience is only an added advantage but if you are thorough with the concepts you can clear the exam. Good Luck to both of you!! Krishna1983 wrote: are there any chances to pass this exam without having any work experience on SQL? I doubt very much that you can pass it without SSMS experience. You don't have to have paid employment experience in SQL Server 2005, but you have to have lots of experience on your own copy of SQL Server. Just practice along in your Management Studio whenever you are learning from books, online, multimedia or live class. It is much better to practice with the Developer Edition than Express.
